Case of the Month
Is your cat or dog ...
- Scratching at ears with feet?
- Rubbing ears/face along the ground?
- Shaking its head?
- Have a head tilt?
- Painful when being patted around head/ears scratched?
- Smelly ear discharge?
- Red hot inflamed ears?
In the summer, dogs are swimming more often which creates a warm moist ear environment ideal for infections, and grass seed problems are common.
If your pets show any of the above signs bring them in for one of our vets to examine ASAP as ear infections or grass seeds have the potential to cause hearing loss, or chronic on going problems if not picked up early.
An ear consult includes an external and internal ear examination, smears taken for cytology, and flushing and cleaning if required. Some cats and dogs have sensitive ears and require sedation or a general anaesthetic is needed to allow us to safely fully examine them, or remove foreign bodies.
